How can your business get started with sustainability? For Hawkins Watts, trans-Tasman-based manufacturer of food and beverage ingredients, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were the answer.
In this webinar, Craig Cooper, Hawkins Watts’ Quality and Operations Manager, joined our Head of Carbon Nicky Andrews to discuss how Hawkins Watts used the SDGs to build its sustainability strategy.
The SDGs are a global blueprint to end inequalities, protect the planet, and promote prosperity and a framework that helps businesses make an impact and become more sustainable.

In the webinar we learned:
Choose SDGs that matter to your business
We worked with Hawkins Watts to uncover which SDGs are relevant to their business. They chose: SDG 3 Good health and wellbeing, SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth, and SDG 12 Responsible production and consumption.
Make changes using policy and values
Hawkins Watts rewrote their environmental policy to be a sustainability policy. Their safety policy expanded to cover health, safety and wellbeing. They also updated their values to include sustainability. The SDGs became part of everyday discussions with staff, customers, and suppliers.
Small companies can have a global impact
Through SDG 8, the company focuses on products with sustainability certifications like Fair Trade and the Rainforest Alliance. Promoting products that pay more to suppliers in developing countries directly improves these suppliers' living conditions.
Communicate your Goals
Craig shares Hawkins Watts’ goals with suppliers and customers and asks them about their sustainability values and whether they use SDGs. This strengthens stakeholder relationships.
