It can be tough starting a sustainability strategy. What is the first step and how do you know what is needed? Our webinar explores how we developed a plan with Omexom/Electrix and how they have delivered that plan. Omexom is one of New Zealand’s largest providers of engineering, construction and maintenance. We ran a maturity assessment, engaged with stakeholders in a materiality assessment and built internal engagement using the Sustainable Development Goals.
Lesley Black, Support Services Director at Omexom, explains how the strategy was developed and is now part of the business. Lesley joins Martin Fryer, our Head of Strategy and Impact New Zealand. Martin will cover the steps involved and how they could apply to your business.

Here's a preview of our webinar
In the webinar we learned:
Few organisations start their sustainability work from scratch
Businesses understand risk and have health and safety programmes. These systems can be used to include sustainability projects.
Omexom’s sustainability projects built on each other
The business set out with a maturity assessment followed by a materiality assessment. Then they selected Sustainable Development Goals relevant for their business and developed a sustainable governance structure. As a next step, they set targets, started tracking their emissions, reported on progress and shared this story with their stakeholders.
Omexom uses policies to connect its sustainability values and operations
The company’s projects - including recycling, school fundraising and community support - all connect to its SDGs and sustainability initiatives.
Sustainability is continuous learning
It takes a lot of small steps to create real change. Lesley found it rewarding to start with little sustainability knowledge and to grow with the challenge as Omexom developed a business-wide programme.
