Driven by a belief in technology’s power to do good, Matthew combines his experience in social enterprise and systems thinking to helping our clients make choices that are better for people, profit and the planet.
He has spent his career applying technology for social good, co-founding Citizen AI – a social enterprise that once developed AI systems for public benefit – he helped create legal chatbots that supported more than 60,000 New Zealanders facing tenancy and employment issues.

Matthew also works with publishing house Steele Roberts Aotearoa, helping bring numerous books to life, including Sharing the Sun: Empowering small-scale renewable generation in Aotearoa with the New Zealand Centre for Sustainable Cities. Another of his main ‘hats’ is serving as a chaplain at Victoria University of Wellington, where his faith inspires in him a sense of environmental stewardship – caring for creation for the sake of all.
At thinkstep-anz, Matthew is motivated by understanding big systems and helping to steer Australasian economies toward sustainability, drawing on his expertise in technology and AI.
Outside of work, Matthew surfs (badly) with his son, plays the drums, swims in the sea and enjoys freedom camping with his family in his parents’ beat-up old motorhome.
