Stirring the pot: Counting carbon with HERA

Research association HERA recently calculated their carbon footprint for the first time with thinkstep-anz to align with their wider sustainability goals. thinkstep-anz’s Dr Barbara Nebel and Christin Schaller joined HERA’s Stirring The Pot podcast along with their CEO Dr Troy Coyle to share their experience working with the company to encourage businesses looking to get started on their carbon reduction journey.

Measuring corporate emissions is a crucial first step for any business to bring about meaningful carbon reduction, but it is a step that may be avoided or postponed due to a limited or inaccurate understanding of the process and what it involves. Measuring corporate emissions is often perceived as a more complex process than it needs to be which is fuelled by its own set of myths and misconceptions. Barbara and Christin demystify the process in the latest episode of HERA’s podcast by delving into the common areas of concern including the misconceptions around scope 3 emissions, neglected emission sources, options for different budgets, and expected timeline.

The episode offers an accessible look into direct and indirect emissions, and scopes 1, 2 and 3, along with the different standards that aim to make emissions reporting consistent, comparable and accurate. Barbara is very familiar with the latter, having been involved in the international development process of the ISO standards for carbon footprinting as the New Zealand representative. As the key first steps to reducing emissions, the episode’s introduction to carbon footprinting and carbon accounting will appeal to businesses, especially SMEs, that are looking to get familiar with their emissions profile.
